Lohan-Jiao Cave─Tzeng Gou Rung Solo Exhibition

About Exhibition

About Forum|
Artist Tzeng Gou-Rung was born in 1990 in Tainan. He grew up with his family running the business of joss stick and spirit money for more than decades. Therefore, the artist is highly interested in the topics of faith and believes. The word “Lohan-Jiao” refers to single men who moved overseas from China to Taiwan during the Qing dynasty. They are likened to young people nowadays, living a life without purchasing house, car, try to carry no burden, but still tried to take their life seriously. The pieces presents the living situation of young people. In this series, the artist took the patterns and images from the traditional temple, then replaced them with things we are familiar with nowadays, to show the believes in our daily life. Such as, replaced traditional dragon image with house cats, took Vase-Antiquarian Paintings and turned it into desk and household appliances. Even more, the artist tried to build a Go-Kart made of traditional palanquin carvings, which made the Go-Kart into a drivable palanquin. In summary, this series of work would in cloud carvings and graphic paintings, presents the concept Lohan-Jiao in modern day life.
Though artists Bui cong khanh and Tzeng Gou-Rung both came from academic background, but when it comes to art creating, artist Tzeng Gou-Rung reached his creativity to the family business of joss stick and spirit money. For artist Bui cong khanh, his creations shared the family history or struggle of being an Chinese in Vietnam. From Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam to Tainan city, Taiwan, two artists both have chosen traditional wood carving art as their focus spontaneously. Chinese culture shows itself behind the symbolic signs from their artwork. Start from wood carving art, the online forum would lead the discussion to joinery works, wooden structural, and how folk arts could play alternative roles in contemporary art, and all the possibilities comes with it.
